Construction and deconstruction of racial identity in the US is a course for students studying for the MA in Anthropology, Cultures, Politics and Societies. The 12-hour module covers both the history of The United States and of Anthropology as a discipline in order to give an overview of key stages of the construction and deconstruction of the "race" concept and of racial identity. It also explores how African American narratives have contributed to rewriting the “Black” identity, and the collective memory of slavery. The module will introduce students to some of the key texts and major concepts within the field of “racial studies” and Anthropology, through critical readings, literature and film. English language support will also be provided in this course.
